SEO Tags – Importance of Heading Tags in SEO

In any article, whenever we want to highlight something we use headings. Because they make our article easy to understand while proper formatting makes it easy to read. Search engines also do the same. They look at the headings to recognize the web pages.

In HTML there are six headings, <h1> is the most important then, <h2> second and so on. Although, any number of headings can be used, but when it comes to SEO we have to be more sophisticated.

On each page, only one <h1> heading should be used, which is the main heading that tells what this page is all about. One can use 3-4 <h2> headings, if the content is of 3000 words. And if the content is less then, do not use more than two <h2> headings.

Always use the keywords or at least part of the keywords in the heading tags. In the previous case the keywords were:

  1. Catering in NYC
  2. Breakfast Catering NYC
  3. Best Catering NYC
  4. NYC Catering

Use the headings like this, <h1>Catering in NYC</h1> or <h2>Breakfast Catering Services in NYC</h2>. Both of these are fine as long as they do not look like the keywords.

H1 Tag

This is the most important tag of the page and on each page only one tag should be used. One must use the main keyword completely in this like, <h1>Catering in NYC</h1>. I do not recommend to break part of this keyword in h1 tag, use it complete instead. One may add few words before or after this tag, but in the h1 tag it should be complete.

Heading Tags Hierarchy

Try to use heading tags in proper sequence like, first h1 tag then, h2 then, h3 and so on. It is not a good practice that you use h2 tag first and after that you use the h1 tag.

Bad Example

<h2>H2 Heading</h2>

<p>some paragraph here</p>

<h1>H1 Heading</h1>

<p>some paragraph here</p>

<h3>H3 Heading</h3>

Good Example

<h1>H1 Heading</h1>

<p>some paragraph here</p>

<h2>H2 Heading</h2>

<p>some paragraph here</p>

<h3>H3 heading</h3>

<p>some paragraph here</p>

<h2>H2 Heading</h2>

<p>some paragraph here</p>

<h3>H3 Heading</h3>

<p>some paragraph here</p>
